Do It Yourself vs. Professional Bathroom Remodeling

Bathroom Remodeling Deciding to take on a bathroom remodeling project can be an exciting yet nerve-racking time. That’s because the thought of having a brand-new bathroom that will be customized to your exact liking is a wonderful thought but the process of getting to the final outcome is not going to be easy. If you’re planning to remodel your bathroom, one question that you might find yourself asking is “should I perform the remodel myself, or hire professionals?” The answer to the question can be complicated and will be based on a number of factors that should be considered carefully. Let’s take a deeper look into this question to see what option will be right for you.

Do It Yourself Bathroom Remodeling

It’s no secret that a bathroom remodeling project can get expensive, so it makes sense that you would want to look for ways to minimize the cost. One idea that usually goes through people’s minds is, “I bet I could save money by doing this myself.” While in theory, yes, you can save money by performing the labor yourself, the reality is, doing it yourself will likely end up costing you more in the long run. Unless you are a contractor, you probably don’t have the skills or knowledge to perform the job correctly. This can lead to costly mistakes, including having to redo a portion of the project or breaking something that will need to be replaced. And even if you do install something correctly, it probably won’t look as nice, which is the entire point of a remodel in the first place. What’s more, unless you have a lot of skilled friends who are willing to help you for free, the project will likely take you much longer than having a professional do it, which will not only cost you your spare time but also render your bathroom unusable for a long period of time.

Hiring a Professional

While turning to a professional remodeling company to perform your bathroom renovation may cost more, you will be able to rest easy knowing that the job will be performed correctly. Professional companies have the experience and skilled employees to get the job done right. They will work hard to ensure that everything is installed correctly and operates perfectly, so your bathroom ends up looking just like it was intended to. What’s more, a good contractor will offer a guarantee, so you can count on them to fix anything that went wrong.

How to Make a Small Bathroom Look Bigger

Bathroom Remodel While it’s nice to have a large and spacious bathroom, not all homeowners can afford this luxury. If you have a home that has a small bathroom that you wish was larger, there are some actions you can take to at least give it the appearance of a larger one. Consider the following tips and tricks:

Choose Light Colors

Light colors such as white and yellow tend to create the illusion of a more open space. If you want to make your bathroom seem larger than it really is, consider painting your bathroom these colors, or choose a wallpaper with these colors.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Having a clean and tidy bathroom will make your bathroom appear more spacious. Put items that aren’t essential away in storage areas so that all that’s left in your bathroom are must-haves.

Utilize Mirrors

Adding mirrors to your bathroom will make it seem larger because it will reflect all of the light in the room. This effect can be achieved either with a large mirror or multiple smaller ones. One trick is to place a mirror opposite the window, if you have one. This will allow it to reflect both natural and artificial light all around the room.

Eliminate the Shower Door or Get a Clear One

If you have a shower door that is frosted or has some type of design on it, it will make your bathroom look smaller. That’s because our eyes stop at the door. Consider replacing the door with a clear one, or even better, getting rid of it altogether and replacing it with a shower curtain. By pushing the shower curtain to one side, you will be able to see all the way to the back of the wall.

Add Depth to the Walls

If you have some artistic talents, consider painting a mural on the largest open wall. Another good idea is to hang a picture that looks like a window with a nice view of the outdoors on the wall. These tips will help to expand the look of your bathroom.

Remove Items That Stick Out

Items that stick out from the wall and cut into the middle of the room can make the room feel smaller. Consider removing wall-like shelves, hanging racks, decorative accessories, and similar fixtures.

By utilizing some of those tips, you’ll be able to create the illusion of more space in your small bathroom, which will go a long way to giving it a larger feel.

Picking Materials for a Bathroom Remodel

Bathroom Remodel Remodeling a bathroom in your home can be an exciting yet stressful experience. On one hand, you’ll be getting a brand-new bathroom, designed to meet all of your needs. But on the other hand, it can be a costly and time-consuming project that will take a lot of planning to get right. One of the most important steps when pursuing a bathroom remodel is choosing which materials you want to use for different areas of your bathroom. You’ll want to consider aspects like appearance, durability, and price. Some of the most common bathroom items that you’ll need to consider include:

Countertops

Countertops are one of the first things you notice when entering a bathroom, and they play a large role in the overall aesthetic. Some of the most popular countertop materials are:

  • Granite – An extremely popular countertop material, granite provides a high-end look for homeowners who are looking to add elegance to their home. Granite countertops are available in a variety of patterns and offer superior durability. However, they are one of the more costly countertop options.
  • Marble – Providing a beautiful and graceful look, marble has long been associated with wealth. However, it has become more affordable due to the improvements in production. Marble is resistant to chipping and denting and complements almost any style, making it an excellent choice for homeowners.
  • Laminate – A very budget-friendly material, laminate is a great option for homeowners looking to make the most of their money. It is available in a number of realistic stonelike and wood-like finishes, so you can get the look of a high-end material without the price.

Flooring

While looks are important when it comes to flooring, you’ll also want floors that can stand up to water, since they will likely get wet very often. Some common bathroom flooring materials include:

  • Ceramic tile – Ceramic tile is waterproof, attractive, and doesn’t cost too much, making it a great flooring option. This tile can be customized in a variety of shapes and sizes, allowing you to create a design that is just right for you.
  • Vinyl – For rooms that will endure a lot of water exposure, such as kids’ bathrooms and laundry rooms, this is a great option. It is very durable, cost effective, and available in a seemingly endless amount of style options.
  • Engineered wood – This type of material delivers the beauty of solid wood combined with the ability to stand up to moisture. It can be a little costly, but it’s a great option for homeowners who can afford it.

Bathing Area

Choosing the right material for your bathing area is also important because you’ll want a tub or shower that looks attractive and can stand the test of time. Some popular options include:

  • Acrylic – Acrylic is durable and easy to clean, making it one of the most popular materials for tubs and showers. It is affordable, but doesn’t sacrifice beauty for the price, and can be customized in a number of options to meet your aesthetic needs.
  • Fiberglass – Fiberglass is another cost-effective option and offers many of the same benefits as acrylic. However, it is not as durable as acrylic and tends to fade, crack, and scratch over time.
  • Cast iron – This is an ideal option for homeowners who want a tub that offers a timeless look. It is very durable and has excellent heat retention. However, it is very heavy and can be difficult to install, and may require reinforcement of the floor in some situations.

For a Beautiful New Bathtub or Shower – Turn to the Experts at Bath Expo

When you’re looking to have a bathtub installed in your home, consider working with the professionals at Bath Expo. How to Remodel a Bathroom on a Budget

Bathroom Remodel Remodeling your bathroom is a great way to update its look and enhance your enjoyment of it. Unfortunately, it can also be quite expensive, and if you don’t have $20,000 dollars laying around, you might think that you’ll have to settle for what you have. Luckily, that’s not the case. You don’t have to spend a fortune for a remodel you can be proud of, you just have to be a little creative to get the most out of your limited budget.

Determine What You Can Afford

While you’ll be able to do more with a larger budget, you can still modernize your bathroom with a small one. If your budget is $1,000 or less, you’ll likely need to go the route of cosmetic changes. If you have a little more money to spend, then you can think about hitting other areas such as the bathing area, flooring, or other fixtures. Here are a few ideas to consider that can have a big impact on your bathroom while making a minimal impact on your wallet:

Be Selective with Tile

Tile can get pretty costly if you place it throughout your entire bathroom, but there are ways to utilize it where it will still provide an impact. For instance, you could place it just on the floor and skip the shower and walls. Or, you could put just one strip of tile along the wall as a focal point and paint the rest of the wall. Perhaps you want an expensive tile but it’s too costly to use for your entire bathroom, consider using it as an accent by surrounding it with less expensive tile. By using some of these ideas, you’ll be able to have new tile in your bathroom while saving money.

Choose Unique or Slightly Damaged Countertops

Granite countertops are becoming an increasingly popular item found in bathrooms across the country. But they can get a little pricey, and that may turn a lot of people who have a smaller budget away. However, there are a few ways to have these countertops installed without breaking the bank. One way is to consider investing in some unique and less-popular styles. By choosing a color that isn’t very popular, you’ll likely be able to save some money because they don’t sell as well as the more common colors. Another idea is to purchase slightly damaged countertops. A company will usually sell countertops that have imperfections for a fraction of the cost, and in many cases the damage is small and almost unnoticeable.

Remodel Just the Bathing Area

Instead of a full remodel, consider remodeling just the bathing area of your bathroom. A new tub or shower can make a huge impact on the overall look of your bathroom, not to mention the enjoyment you get from your bathing experience, and will cost much less than a full bathroom remodel. What’s more, this type of remodel can usually be completed in a day or two, so you won’t have to deal with a long remodeling process.

Planning a Bathroom Renovation

Bathroom Renovation If you have a bathroom that is outdated or if you just moved into a new home and want to create a bathroom that matches your taste, you may be considering a bathroom renovation project. However, because a remodel can be a costly and time-consuming endeavor, you’ll need to take the time to plan your bathroom renovation carefully. That means, before you start ripping out fixtures and buying paint, you’ll need to come up with a concrete plan that will ensure you get everything you want (and can afford) so you won’t be left with a half-completed bathroom that leaves you worse off than when you started.

Determine a Budget

This is one of the most important steps when planning a bathroom renovation. When determining your budget, there are a few factors that you’ll have to consider. First, are you remodeling a small, medium, or large bathroom? Size is an important consideration because the bigger the bathroom is, the more costly the remodel will be.

Another thing to consider is if you’ll be doing a complete remodel that includes everything from the floors, ceiling, toilet, counters, and bathing area, or just a partial remodel such as the tub or shower only. A good rule of thumb is that if you’re planning on doing a full remodel, you’ll want to spend somewhere between 5–10% of the total value of your home. It’s also a good idea to set your budget higher than what you’re expecting to spend, because issues tend to come up and if you have a budget that you can’t go over, you could find yourself in a predicament.

Choose Your Materials

Once you’ve set your budget, you can choose the materials you want for your bathroom remodel. Do you want granite, marble, or quartz countertops? What about your bathtub, do you want it to be made out of acrylic, steel, or perhaps fiberglass? Don’t forget about the floors, light fixtures, walls, and everything else that comprises a bathroom. No matter what materials you go with, make sure that everything is accounted for before you start your project. If you realize you need something else halfway through your remodel, you could end up turning your project into a much more costly endeavor than you anticipated.

Choose a Company You Can Trust

Unless you’re an experienced contractor, you’re going to have to hire a company to perform the remodel. This is an extremely important step because the technicians will be doing all of the work and will play the biggest role in how your project turns out. Make sure that you do your research and choose a company that has a lot of great reviews, experience performing similar types of jobs, and are licensed and insured. If you hire the wrong company, you could not only have the project last far longer than it should, but you could also end up with a bathroom where the new upgrades don’t look right, such as uneven tile work, fixtures that aren’t installed correctly, etc., which would negate the entire purpose of the remodel.

What is an Acrylic Shower?

Acrylic Shower Acrylic has quickly become one of the most popular materials for showers because it is extremely durable, can be customized in almost any size, and is a very affordable option when compared to other types of shower materials.

How Are Acrylic Showers Made?

An acrylic shower is made by heating up an acrylic sheet, which becomes soft and malleable. That sheet is then suctioned via vacuum to a customized mold to form the shower. The shower is then cooled by powerful ventilators until it hardens. After that, it is reinforced with fiberglass to ensure it is strong enough to hold water and withstand daily wear and tear. Lastly it is shipped off to be installed in a home.

What Sizes Do Acrylic Showers Come In?

If you’re thinking about replacing your old shower with a new acrylic shower, you’re probably wondering if it will fit into your existing shower space. Because acrylic showers are usually made to order, they can be customized in almost any size and shape you need, so you can feel confident that no matter what size wet area you have, you’ll be able to find an acrylic shower that will be the perfect fit.

Are Acrylic Showers Easy to Clean?

Acrylic showers are very easy to clean. All you’ll need to do is wipe them down with a mild cleaner, or even just some soap and water, to keep them looking like new. Baking soda is also a good option when it comes to removing a stubborn stain from your shower. However, it’s important to keep in mind that acetone, or any other solvents, shouldn’t be used to clean acrylic showers because they can damage them.

How Long Will an Acrylic Shower Last?

This question can also be hard to answer because there are so many factors that play a role in the longevity of an acrylic shower. For instance, when the shower was being built, if it was stretched further than a standard size shower to accommodate a larger shower space, it will be thinner and less durable, shortening its life span. Another factor that will determine the life span of an acrylic shower is how thick the shower pan is. The thicker the shower pan, the less likely it will be to crack. And finally, the most important factor when it comes to the longevity of an acrylic shower is how well it is maintained. If the shower is cleaned regularly and well taken care of, its life will be extended. In general, you can expect a shower pan to last around 10 years, and possibly much longer.

How Long Does It Take to Remodel a Small Bathroom?

Bathroom Remodel Have you grown tired of the way your small bathroom looks? Is it outdated, not meeting your needs, or not equipped with features that you want such as an updated shower or granite countertops? If so, you might be considering remodeling your small bathroom so that you can customize it to meet all of your needs. However, before undertaking such a project, one of the biggest concerns you probably have is the amount of time it will take for this type of project to be completed. Unfortunately, there is no standard time table for a small bathroom remodel because there are so many factors to consider, such as what parts of your bathroom you want to remodel and who you’re choosing to perform the job. To help you get a better understanding of how long your small bathroom remodel is going to take, ask yourself the following questions:

What Parts of My Bathroom Do I Want to Remodel?

It probably goes without saying, but the more parts of the bathroom you want to remodel, the longer the remodeling process will take. If you want to completely gut your bathroom and build a new one from the ground up, you’ll probably be looking at a minimum of nine weeks to complete the remodel. And that’s if you hire professionals and everything goes perfectly. However, another good option can be to just remodel the wet area (bathing area) of your bathroom. This simple project can usually be completed in just a few days, is much cheaper than a complete remodel, and can provide a boost to the overall aesthetics of your bathroom.

Am I Going to Complete the Job Myself or Hire a Pro?

Undoubtedly, the answer to this question will play the biggest role in determining how long it is going to take for your bathroom remodel to be completed. If you’re planning to complete the work yourself, you can expect the timeline of the project to go up exponentially because you’ll probably work at a much slower pace than a team of experienced professionals who do this for a living. Plus, if you make a mistake, you’ll need to take time to correct it, which could prove not only time-consuming but very costly as well. If you want your project done more quickly, you should hire a professional. That’s because a professional who does this kind of work for a living will be able to coordinate all of the different tradesmen needed for the job, including carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, and more to make the process run as smoothly as possible. What’s more, when you hire a professional, you can count on the work being done right and looking just like you planned it to.

How Much Does it Cost to Replace a Tub with a Walk-in Shower?

Walk-in Shower There are a number of reasons for wanting to replace your bathtub with a walk-in shower. Maybe you don’t ever use your bathtub because a shower is a quicker and more convenient way of bathing. Or, perhaps you want to create a more modern and open look in your bathroom. Whatever the reason is, before you consider undergoing a project like this, you’ll likely want to know what the cost of such an endeavor will be. However, that number can be hard to determine because the cost of replacing a tub with a shower can vary widely depending on a number of factors, including:

Will You Hire Professionals or Do It Yourself?

Deciding between hiring professionals or completing the project yourself will play a major role in determining the cost of your project. If you’re highly skilled in this line of work, understand plumbing, and have handy friends that are willing to donate their time, you can save some money by doing the project yourself. However, if you don’t have all of the aforementioned things, going the DIY route can actually end up costing you a lot more money. That’s because if you install something incorrectly, break something, or mismanage any part of the project, the price of your project will keep skyrocketing. Not to mention the fact that a DIY project rarely looks as good as one completed by experienced professionals.

What Type of Material Will Your Shower Be Made Of?

Choosing which type of material your shower is made of is also an important factor when it comes to the cost of your tub-to-shower conversion project. Some materials will be more expensive than others, and each comes with its own benefits as well as disadvantages. Some of the most common materials used in the construction of walk-in showers include:

  • Glass tile – Glass tiles are a popular option because they provide a unique and beautiful look for your shower. Unfortunately, they are very brittle and can break easily, plus they are very expensive, so this option will drive the price of your project up and may require a lot of repairs down the road.
  • Stone tile – Stone tile is a beautiful style of tiling that looks like natural marble. They are installed one-by-one in your wall and are often very expensive, increasing the cost of your project. Some of the cons that come with this sort of tile is the fact they can be stained very easily and are hard to clean.
  • Ceramic – Ceramic tiles are an inexpensive option and tend to be a little larger than glass or stone tiles. While the price of ceramic tiles is relatively low, they can be difficult to install and are not very stylish.
  • Acrylic – Acrylic is quickly becoming one of the most popular materials for showers because it can come in a variety of textures and colors, is mold and mildew resistant, easy to install, and relatively inexpensive.

What Type of Accessories Do You Want?

Another major factor that will play a role in determining the cost of your walk-in shower will be what accessories you want to incorporate. Some of the accessories that most walk-in showers can be equipped with include shelving, seats, soap bars, foot pedestals, shower caddies, and more. Just keep in mind that each accessory you want to be added to your shower will also increase its overall cost.

Is Bathtub Refinishing Worth It?

New Bathtub Taking a nice, soothing bath after a long day can be a truly pleasurable experience. However, in order to enjoy your bathtub to its fullest, you’ll need to have a tub that you actually want to get into. If your tub is covered in rust, has stain marks all over it, or is cracked, you probably don’t look forward to bathing. If that’s the case for you, you may be considering refinishing your bathtub, but is refinishing your bathtub worth it? Well, that will depend on a number of factors, but first, you’ll need to read on to understand exactly what bathtub refinishing is.

What Is Bathtub Refinishing?

Bathtub refinishing is a process that involves refreshing the surface of an old or damaged bathtub to a like-new condition. This process includes the following steps:

  • Sanding the tub – The first step involves stripping the tub of its old finish and then sanding it down to create a smooth surface.
  • Repairing the tub – After the tub is sanded down, it’s time to repair any holes, cracks, or chips. This is usually done by using some type of polyester putty to fill in these areas.
  • Applying primer, coating, and a sealant to the tub – Next, a primer should be applied to the tub, followed by multiple layers of coating, and finally a sealant to give your tub a like-new appearance.
  • Buffing the tub – The final step in the bathtub refinishing process is to buff down the tub to ensure that it’s nice and smooth.

While there are do-it-yourself bathtub refinishing kits available, it’s always best to hire an experienced professional for this job. That’s because these types of DIY kits don’t use high-quality materials and the results usually don’t last as long and don’t look as nice when compared to the work of a professional.

Is Your Tub a Good Candidate for Bathtub Refinishing?

While bathtub refinishing can be a great and cost-effective way to bring your tub back to life, it’s not always the best option. If your tub is in relatively good shape and you’re happy with its size and features, but just needs to have some minor scratches, stains, or other cosmetic repairs made, this may be a good option for you. Also, if you have a special type of tub such as an antique claw-foot tub that’s made from heavy iron, a bathtub refinish is probably a better way to go as opposed to replacing the tub. But keep in mind that this is more of a cosmetic fix than a permanent solution, so if your tub is in really bad condition, this might not be a good option.

A Bathtub Replacement May Be a Better Option

Whether your bathtub is beyond repair, or you just want a completely new tub that can be customized to meet your functional needs and aesthetic preferences, a bathtub replacement is the way to go. This option will allow you to customize every detail of your tub, including the size, material, and accessories, so you can get the tub of your dreams. What’s more, because you’ll be getting a completely new tub rather than fixing up an old one, you can count on getting a tub that you’ll be able to enjoy for years to come.

Keith and Brenda Murphy, Receive Life-Changing Gift as Part of the Third Annual Baths for the Brave

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 5.5 million U.S. veterans are living with a disability; many facing everyday challenges such as bathing. In honor of Veterans Day, Bath Expo, a leading bath, shower and walk-in-tub renovation company with locations in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, is teaming up with nine home improvement companies from across the country for the third annual Baths for the Brave.

This one-day special event is planned for Friday, Nov. 8, and will provide 17 veterans from across the country, including Keith and Brenda Murphy from Coppell with a brand-new tub or shower system, free of charge, to help improve the lives of those who sacrificed so much for our country. To date, Baths for the Brave has helped 19 veterans eliminate the everyday fight to bathe, and this year that number continues to grow.

Keith and Brenda met while serving our country in Korea. Keith was in the U.S. Army for four years as a Sergeant and specialized in Infantry, Mortars. Brenda served in a different unit of the military, but their paths crossed and soon love was in the air. After returning to the U.S., Keith and Brenda got married and Keith started working as a truck driver.

In August 2018, while Keith was out on his motorcycle going through an intersection, he was hit by a car making an illegal left turn. The injuries he suffered were so significant, it forced his wife Brenda to make the decision to amputate his leg above the knee in order to save his life. “It was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but in the end, I chose to keep him alive, whatever the cost,” Brenda explained. “For him to receive this honor and for you guys to make our bath more accessible to him is something I cannot thank you for enough.”

Currently, Keith is training for the 2022 Paralympics for bobsledding. He refuses to let his injury define his life. “I may have lost my leg, but I refuse to lose my spirit, fight and will to live,” Keith said. “I try to make the best of it every day, but it’s the struggle with the simple, every day tasks like bathing that are very difficult for me.”

“We are proud to be a part of Baths for the Brave’s third year of helping veterans in need across our country,” Bath Expo marketing director, Amanda McDaniel, said. “Helping those who have done so much for this country already is the least we could do, and we’re honored to be able to make a small improvement in the lives of our nation’s heroes.”

Baths for the Brave was created by Tundraland Home Improvements, a Wisconsin-based home remodeling company, as a way to provide local veterans and families in need with remodeled bathrooms, all free of charge. Brian Gottlieb, creator of Baths for the Brave and owner of Tundraland, has a long-term goal to involve all 50 states. “Giving back is a fundamental way of life for us at Tundraland,” Brian Gottlieb said. “It’s more than what we do; it’s who we are. Our whole team is on board and passionate about serving others, so growing this program nationwide was something we were all very excited about. We’re thankful our partnering home improvement companies have similar values. To see this program extend into its third year is incredible.”

All participating home improvement companies, including Tundraland, will donate 100 percent of their time and materials to a veteran in need from their own local community. The remodels across the country will all take place simultaneously. Additional participating companies also include:

  • Alenco Home Improvement; Lenexa, Kan.
  • Baths for Less; Tempe, Arizona
