How to Make a Small Bathroom Look Bigger

Posted in General

While it's nice to have a large and spacious bathroom, not all homeowners can afford this luxury. If you have a home that has a small bathroom that you wish was larger, there are some actions you can take to at least give it the appearance of a larger one. Consider the following tips and tricks:

Choose Light Colors

Light colors such as white and yellow tend to create the illusion of a more open space. If you want to make your bathroom seem larger than it really is, consider painting your bathroom these colors, or choose a wallpaper with these colors.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Having a clean and tidy bathroom will make your bathroom appear more spacious. Put items that aren't essential away in storage areas so that all that's left in your bathroom are must-haves.

Utilize Mirrors

Adding mirrors to your bathroom will make it seem larger because it will reflect all of the light in the room. This effect can be achieved either with a large mirror or multiple smaller ones. One trick is to place a mirror opposite the window, if you have one. This will allow it to reflect both natural and artificial light all around the room.

Eliminate the Shower Door or Get a Clear One

If you have a shower door that is frosted or has some type of design on it, it will make your bathroom look smaller. That's because our eyes stop at the door. Consider replacing the door with a clear one, or even better, getting rid of it altogether and replacing it with a shower curtain. By pushing the shower curtain to one side, you will be able to see all the way to the back of the wall.

Add Depth to the Walls

If you have some artistic talents, consider painting a mural on the largest open wall. Another good idea is to hang a picture that looks like a window with a nice view of the outdoors on the wall. These tips will help to expand the look of your bathroom.

Remove Items That Stick Out

Items that stick out from the wall and cut into the middle of the room can make the room feel smaller. Consider removing wall-like shelves, hanging racks, decorative accessories, and similar fixtures.

By utilizing some of those tips, you'll be able to create the illusion of more space in your small bathroom, which will go a long way to giving it a larger feel.
